About
I’m Henry Yip (葉昊彥), born and raised in Hong Kong. My training is in mathematical physics at the University of Edinburgh, and I am drawn to problems where geometry, dynamics and computation meet.
Research interests
- The gravitational three-body problem and celestial mechanics
- Integrable systems, in particular Euler’s problem of two fixed centres
- Symplectic and geometric numerical integration
- Dynamical systems and chaos
Education
BSc Mathematical Physics, University of Edinburgh
Research experience
Summer research project, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Edinburgh (2024). The gravitational three-body problem, supervised by Prof. Jenni Smillie. I built symplectic integrators to study the figure-eight, Lagrange and Broucke–Hadjidemetriou–Hénon orbits and Euler’s two-centre problem, and studied the existence proof of the figure-eight orbit and the convergence of Sundman’s series. The work led to a publication; the research log documents it week by week.
Group project: pendulum models for liquid slosh. With Patrick Truong, Gregory Barbanel and Abdullah Fouzuddeen, supported by the Edinburgh Scientific Researchers Association. Poster (PDF)
